I led the design and direction for a website refresh for Denver's oldest diner, the Cherry Cricket.

Background

Established in 1945, "The Cherry Cricket" is the oldest burger joint in Denver, Colorado. It has been featured on the TV series Man V. Food and Best Thing I Ever Ate and people are known to travel from far and wide just to get a taste of their famous burger. Cherry Cricket recently underwent a larger rebranding, that incorporated more hand drawn illustrations to describe more of the brand's quirky characteristics. With the opening of a new location in the famous lower downtown Denver neighborhood, a website refresh was needed.

Project Goals

  • Redesign website of Cherry Cricket to reflect a more illustrative brand
  • Generate publicity for resturant re-opening through online media and website launch
  • Create a more narrative space to show the history and stories of the Cherry Cricket
  • Create a website that reflects the old spirit and space of Denver's oldest burger joint

Brand Standards

The theme of the site, based on a vintage look from the 50's diner culture but also a casual look that it was created and made by hand. I created hand-drawn illustrations based on old comics from Cherry Crickets 1950's art style. Each illustration brought a modern take on meaningful art for the brand.  This hand-drawn style was then extended to the web library for the site, from the buttons to social icons, the look gave the site a truly unique sense of continuity.

Website Process

As lead designer for this project, I designed a responsive website that personified the experience of Cherry Cricket. Furthering the aesthetics of real life photography and hand drawn illustrations, as well as including personal and social profiles of people who love this diner, I created a mixture of modern and retro elements to personify the Cricket's unique brand and place in Denver.

Though the website had to be an expression of the Cherry Cricket brand it also had to highlight important information for the user. Primarily it's menu rotation items, its multiple location hours and events put on by its new owner Breckenridge Brewing. Clarity amongst craft was key in this process ensuring legibility and clear navigation.
